What is the Mountview Health Complex? What services will it provide?
The Mountview Health Complex is a new health facility being built in Beaverlodge. It will be an integrated campus of care offering 24-hour Urgent Care services, emergency medical services (EMS) and other collaborative health services, including 32 lower acuity/restorative care beds.
The Mountview Health Complex will support a continuum of care by adding to the services offered at the nearby Grande Prairie Regional Hospital (GPRH).
GPRH will continue to be the hub for high acuity regional services and residents will continue to rely on surrounding sites for community-based care and services.
The 9,000-square-metre Mountview Health Complex will be built by the Mountview Limited Partnership beginning in Spring 2025 and construction is expected to be completed in 2028.
What is Urgent Care?
The Urgent Care Centre (UCC) will provide medical care for patients with complex or urgent health concerns. The UCC will also stabilize and transfer patients who need a higher level of care to GPRH or to facilities in Edmonton.
Urgent care services are for people who have unexpected but non-life-threatening health concerns that usually require same-day treatment. Some examples include broken bones, sprains, lacerations, asthma, dehydration, pain and infections.
All patients are seen according to the urgency of their health condition, with the sickest patients being seen first.
Will residents get the same level of care at the Mountview Health Complex be the same as they currently receive?
Yes. The services that will be offered at the Mountview Health Complex through the 24-hour Urgent Care Centre will mirror those currently available.
EMS will transport patients with urgent care needs to the Mountview Health Complex.
As occurs today, EMS will transport patients with life-threatening emergencies to Grande Prairie Regional Hospital or to facilities in Edmonton, where higher acuity care is available.
Where will people from Beaverlodge and the surrounding community access emergency, acute, and trauma services?
Residents can attend Mountview Health Complex for most urgent care needs, 24/7. In high-acuity cases, patients will be transferred to Grande Prairie Regional Hospital (GPRH) or to facilities in Edmonton, as they are now.
Residents of Beaverlodge and the surrounding geographic area are also encouraged to visit the GPRH. This acute care facility has a 24-hour emergency department and can treat higher acuity, meaning more serious, conditions than the Mountview Health Complex.
Health Link (811), EMS, and 911 remain available to the community 24/7.
What happens if you need care the Mountview Health Complex cannot provide?
FFor urgent care, residents are encouraged to visit the Mountview Health Complex Urgent Care Centre or call 911 to receive care from EMS.
Higher acuity, meaning more serious, care needs will be met at GPRH as they currently are. The relationship between the Beaverlodge health facility and the GPRH will continue in the same way it exists today.
For patients with higher acuity needs that require regional or tertiary support:
- Walk-in: the Urgent Care Centre will stabilize and transfer to GPRH or Edmonton facilities
- EMS: will proceed directly to GPRH Emergency Department
For non-urgent care, residents are encouraged to call 811, reach out to their family physician, or access an after-hours clinic.
Which communities will be served by the Mountview Health Complex?
The local geographic area of Beaverlodge serves over 12,000 residents from the West County of Beaverlodge and is home to the following communities: Albright, Beaverlodge, Brainard, Demmitt, Elmworth, Goodfare, Halcourt, Hayfield, Hazelmere, Hinton Trail, Homestead, Horse Lake First Nation, Huallen, Hythe, Kelly Lake, La Glace, Lymburn, Mount Valley, Niobe/W of Sexsmith, Pipestone Creek, Poplar Hill, Rio Grande, Valhalla, and Wembley.
Aligned with the experiences of many northern communities, the facility may also serve other Albertans who work or visit the area, along with some residents traveling in from British Columbia.
Who is responsible for building the Mountview Health Complex?
The Mountview Health Complex is being built and will be owned by the Mountview Health Limited Partnership, which is a public-private partnership made up of The Town of Beaverlodge and Landrex Inc.
AHS has been identified as the anchor tenant at the complex. The lease was approved by the Treasury Board of the Government of Alberta on November 9, 2023, and was subsequently signed by AHS, the Mountview Health Limited Partnership, and Alberta Health.
What is a Public-Private Partnership?
Public-private partnerships (P3s) are a type of procurement model for constructing and operating major capital infrastructure. As the name suggests, it involves a partnership between one or more public entity and one or more private entity.
P3s offer centralized oversight of commercial, legal, and financial activities throughout construction and operation periods.
Will there be an opportunity for the community to provide input into the new building
Yes. While the Clinical Services Plan and Functional Program are complete, and the design of the facility is well underway, there will be opportunities for the public to help shape the future of the facility.
AHS will be working with patient and family advisors on various aspects of the Mountview Health Complex, and encourage anyone interested in participating to contact ahs.nz.communications@ahs.ca.
To date, patients and families have been consulted throughout planning for the facility, as is standard practice for new facilities. There have been opportunities for public feedback including a community town hall in 2016, an online survey, an engagement campaign in 2022 with staff, physicians, and the Mountview Health Complex Committee, and a community information session in June 2024, which was attended by over 400 people.
Will there be employment opportunities and local procurement through the construction?
The Mountview Health Limited Partnership is committed to delivering this project on schedule and on budget. A key piece of this will be achieved through local procurement.
