Doris McFarlane

Doris McFarlane: A Legacy of Care and Community

Doris McFarlane began her journey in nursing in 1943, enrolling in nursing school in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. She later expanded her education in Montreal, Quebec, gaining specialized knowledge in obstetrics and infectious diseases. In 1948, Doris accepted a position in Beaverlodge, Alberta, under the guidance of head nurse Muriel McRae, whom she had met during her training in Montreal. It was in Beaverlodge that Doris met Doug McFarlane, and the two married the following year. After raising two children, Doris continued her dedication to healthcare by working with the Victorian Order of Nursing. In this role, she provided essential medical care within the community and served as an ambulance attendant, supporting many patient transfers to Edmonton.

In 2010, demonstrating her enduring commitment to the well-being of her community, Doris donated a large parcel of land to the Town of Beaverlodge for the construction of a new hospital. Despite numerous visits from government ministers and officials, Doris remained hopeful that she would witness the beginning of this critical project. On October 14, 2021, the day after Doris passed away at the age of 98, the Town announced a public-private partnership to build a new health complex. Doris McFarlane’s legacy lives on through her profound contributions to healthcare and her unwavering dedication to the Beaverlodge community.

Groundbreaking Ceremony

Mountview Health Complex and Urgent Care Centre (UCC):

What You Need to Know

The new Mountview Health Complex in Beaverlodge will include a 24-hour Urgent Care Centre (UCC), providing same-day treatment for unexpected but non-life-threatening health concerns such as broken bones, infections, asthma, and minor injuries. The UCC will also stabilize and transfer patients requiring higher acuity care to Grande Prairie Regional Hospital (GPRH) or facilities in Edmonton, maintaining the current care pathways.

The complex will house 32 inpatient beds, lab services, diagnostic imaging, and emergency medical services (EMS), while offering recovery, rehabilitation, and transitional care to support a continuum of health services for the community.

Construction of the 9,000-square-metre facility will begin in Spring 2025, with completion expected by 2028. The Mountview Health Complex is designed to complement services provided by the nearby GPRH, ensuring access to comprehensive, integrated care for residents of Beaverlodge and surrounding areas.

For higher acuity emergencies, GPRH remains the regional hub for advanced care. For non-urgent needs, residents are encouraged to utilize Health Link (811), contact their family physician, or visit an after-hours clinic.
